Semiconductor Sector to Generate 1 Million Jobs in India by 2026: Skilled Talent in High Demand
India, with a population of 1.44 billion and a strong educational framework, is set to become a talent hub in semiconductor industry.
India’s plan to become a semiconductor manufacturing hub is likely to create around one million job opportunities by 2026 states an industry report. This expansion will span across various sectors, including 3,00,000 jobs in chip semiconductor fabrication and design. Around 1,50,000 in ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging), and significant openings in software development, system circuits, and supply chain management. Job roles like engineers, operators, technicians, and specialists in quality control, procurement, and materials engineering, showcasing India’s need to build a skilled semiconductor workforce.
India's semiconductor market was valued USD 29.84 billion in FY-2023 and will grow to USD 79.20 billion by FY2031. Govt of India has allocated ₹1,500 crore for chip manufacturing, ₹100 crore for electronic display and ₹900 crore to upgrade semiconductor lab in Mohali under India Semiconductor Mission. ₹76,000 crore Semicon India initiative will probably create a competitive semiconductor ecosystem.
Private companies are also planning to invest in new assembly and testing facilities, which will potentially generating high-tech and construction jobs. Job roles in this sector are of Process Integration Engineer, Semiconductor Wafer Inspector, Design Engineer, and Quality Control Specialist.
Addressing skill gap challenge, industry leaders emphasize importance of workforce development and skill training. According to Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, India needs to upskill 100,000 professionals annually to meet its goal of one million employees by 2030. Practical training through internships is also crucial for strengthening country's semiconductor talent, with investments in skilling and re-skilling expected to increase by 25% in next 2–3 years.
As global demand for semiconductors continues to rise, India, with a population of 1.44 billion and a strong educational framework, will become a significant talent hub in semiconductor industry.
