International Women's Day is celebrated worldwide on March 8. To mark this important occasion, let's take a look at how many women are enrolling in one of the most popular fields of higher education in India—Engineering. This overview will provide insights into female participation in this traditionally male-dominated area of study.

Female Enrollment in Undergraduate Engineering & Technology

Female Enrollment in Undergraduate Engineering & Technology is 29.1%, Reveals AISHE Report

As per the most recent AISHE report "AISHE Final Report 2021-22", there are about 39.04 lakh students enrolled in Engineering and Technology programs at the undergraduate level. Among these students, around 29% are women and 71% are men. While Engineering and Technology is a popular choice for students after finishing class 12, it ranks fourth in terms of total enrollments compared to other fields of study. The highest number of students are in the Arts stream, followed by Science in second place and Commerce in third. Interestingly, fewer students enroll in Engineering and Technology for Postgraduate degrees, but this field sees many more students pursuing PhDs.

About AISHE

The Ministry of Education has been conducting an annual online survey called the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2010-11 to assess the state of higher education in the country. The survey collects data from all institutions that provide higher education. It gathers information on various aspects like the number of teachers, student enrollment, courses, exam results, funding, and infrastructure.

The survey also calculates key indicators of educational progress, such as the number of institutions, Gross Enrolment Ratio, teacher-student ratio, Gender Parity Index, and per-student spending. This data helps in making informed decisions and conducting research to improve the education sector.
