60% Profs, Over 40% Associate Prof Post Vacant in CUs: Education Ministry
In IITs, more than 40 percent of faculty posts are vacant, as per the Education Ministry out of 11170 faculty positions 4502 are lying vacant.
Around 60 percent post of professors is lying vacant in central universities. As per the Ministry of Education, out of 18,956 sanctioned teaching posts in 45 central universities 6180 are vacant. As many as 1529 posts of professors in central universities are lying vacant out of the total sanctioned 2553 posts. The situation of associate professors is equally bad with more than 2300 posts lying vacant out of the total sanction of 5110 posts.
In IITs, more than 40 percent of faculty posts are vacant, as per the Education Ministry out of 11170 faculty positions 4502 are lying vacant. Close to 500 posts in Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are lying vacant out of sanctioned 1566 posts.
While replying to a question on whether the Government has taken note that over 33 per cent of the sanctioned teaching posts are vacant in central universities across the country seriously affecting the quality of education, Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan in Lok Sabha stated the numbers and said that occurrence of vacancies and filling thereof is a continuous process.
He said: “Ministry of Education has also directed all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to fill up the vacancies in a Mission Mode.” Pradhan said that in addition to writing to all the HEIs to fill up the vacancies in a Mission Mode, the Ministry has set up a monthly monitoring mechanism.
