Kerala planning to replace Governor as Chancellor of varsities with ‘Expert’
Kerala Governor in his capacity as the Chancellor of state universities issued show-cause notices to VCs of 11 universities.
The Kerala government is planning to bring an ordinance and remove Governor as the chancellor of state universities and replace the post with an expert. Recently, the Kerala Governor in his capacity as the Chancellor of state universities issued show-cause notices to the VCs of 11 universities.
As per reports, the Kerala cabinet has decided to bring in an ordinance to replace Governor as the Chancellor and bring in an expert as Chancellor.
Earlier yesterday, the Kerala High Court asked Governor Arif Mohammed Khan in the state not to take any action against the vice-chancellors who were given show-cause notices by him until the court hears the matter.
Governor asked the VCs through the notices to know why they should be allowed to continue in their posts, as their appointments were illegal as per a recent Supreme Court ruling.
On October 21, the SC quashed the appointment of the VC of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, stating the University Grants Commission (UGC) norms which say that the search committee constituted by the state should have recommended a panel of not less than three suitable people in the field of engineering science to the Chancellor but, instead it sent only one name.
Based on the SC judgment, Khan called for the resignations of VCs as their appointment violated UGC regulations because their names were the only ones recommended for appointment.
