New Research University in Kolkata to Launch Ph.D. Programs in 2025, Masters in 2026

The university will house five schools: Natural Sciences; Mathematical and Computer Science; Health, Environment & Sustainability Studies; Humanities & Social Sciences; and Economics.
TCG Centres for Research and Education in Science and Technology (TCG CREST) will establish a cutting-edge research university in Kolkata, with Ph.D. programs starting in August 2025 and innovative masters programs following in August 2026.
The university, recently granted ‘Deemed to be University’ status by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, will offer courses in neuroscience, cancer research, artificial intelligence, quantum engineering, sustainable energy, food technology, and humanities, including economics, aligning with its multidisciplinary research vision.
The institution will operate under a unique “reverse trajectory” model, prioritizing research through specialized centers before rolling out academic programs. The university will house five schools: Natural Sciences; Mathematical and Computer Science; Health, Environment & Sustainability Studies; Humanities & Social Sciences; and Economics.
Admissions for Ph.D. programs will begin in August 2025, with masters programs launching a year later, combining liberal arts and sciences with translational research to prepare students for diverse careers.
Located in Kolkata, a hub for scientific research as per the Nature Index, TCG CREST’s university will leverage its research centers, including the Centre for High Impact Neuroscience and Translational Applications (CHINTA), Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE), and others, to foster collaboration and attract top faculty and students globally.
Dr. Purnendu Chatterjee, Founding Chairman, emphasized the institution’s commitment to nation-building through scientific advancement, addressing challenges in healthcare, climate change, and data-driven intelligence.
Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), the university’s curriculum will balance cutting-edge research with career readiness, ensuring graduates contribute to India’s economic and societal goals. TCG CREST also plans to expand globally through collaborative research initiatives, building on its reputation for excellence since its inception in 2020 under The Chatterjee Group (TCG).
