Uma Kanjilal Appointed First Woman Vice Chancellor of IGNOU

She has worked for more than 36 years in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system. She has strong experience in academic leadership, digital education, and building online learning systems. 

Prof. Kanjilal has been a Professor of Library and Information Science since 2003. She is well-known in India for her work in e-learning, ICT in libraries, digital libraries, and making multimedia course materials. She is also the National Coordinator for SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA, which are big digital education programs of the Ministry of Education.Internationally, she has done important work too. She was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Illinois (USA) in 1999–2000. She has worked as a consultant for the Commonwealth of Learning and helped with digital education for UNRWA in Jordan. She has won many awards like the Manthan Award for e-Education, an Australia-India Council Grant, and a DANIDA Fellowship.
She has played a big role in making IGNOU strong in digital education. She led the National Virtual Library of India Project and now manages IGNOU’s Project Management Unit under NMEICT Phase-III. This shows her commitment to using technology for education.
Her appointment is very important because IGNOU is working on National Education Policy. This will help India move toward the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 by giving education that is inclusive, flexible, and technology-based.
