Kerala Government has given nod to the menstrual leaves for all the female students who are students at state Universities. As per the official notice released by the Kerala Higher education department, the attendance limit for girl students is fixed at 73 percent, including menstrual leave. The official order also provides maternity leave up to a maximum of 60 days to female students who have reached the age of 18.

The Kerala government has allowed Period leaves in all institutions under the Department of Higher Education, Kerala after the same was implemented by Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT).

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan also tweeted from his official handle that, "Once again, Kerala sets a model for the nation. Menstrual and maternity leaves will be granted to female students of all institutions under our Department of Higher Education, reaffirming LDF Government's commitment to realising a gender just society."

As a first, CUSAT, Kerala granted the "menstruation benefit" to female students giving an additional 2 per cent of condonation of shortage of attendance to female students, in each semester. CUSAT sanctioned menstrual leave as the students' union demanded the same and submitted a proposal to the Vice Chancellor. The VC accepted the proposal and an official order granting menstrual benefits to female students.
