No IIM for Telangana, Centre Denies Request

India has a total of 22 IIMs located across 21 states. Telangana, Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim does not have an IIM. Recently, the Telangana Government pushed for an IIM in the state for better education avenues. However, Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, denied the request during a session in the Lok Sabha. Despite the strong push, the proposal was rejected as the state already has a strong education ecosystem. As per AISHE, Telangana hosts a total of 2070 higher education institutes, of which 604 offer management courses.Β  Additionally, the minister confirmed that the Union government did receive a formal request to sanction an IIM in Hyderabad.

Telangana's Growing Education Hub

To explain the rejection, the Centre highlighted the massive number of colleges already working in the state. 604 institutes with Management courses include 20 universities, 570 colleges, and 14 standalone institutes. Telangana is home toΒ famous central institutions, including the University of Hyderabad, IIT Hyderabad, NIT Warangal, the English and Foreign Languages University, and the Maulana Azad National Urdu University.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy tried hard to bring the IIM to Hyderabad. During a recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he requested central support for this project. The Chief Minister stated that an IIM would help the state meet the goals of the NEP 2020. To show the state's commitment, he offered 200 acres of free land to build the campus.
