NMC has sent a letter of approval for the eighth medical college in Assam, as confirmed by State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta.

Assam medical education directorate has received a letter of approval from NMC (National Medical Commission) for the eighth medical college in the state. State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta has confirmed this through a statement.

Moreover, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has tweeted that with the new medical college in Lakhimpur, the number of MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) seats in the state has increased to 1,100.

"In a major milestone for Assam, I'm glad to share that @NMC_IND has approved a new Medical College for Lakhimpur with 100 seats for MBBS. A matter of great personal pride as I see this 8th College, I dreamt of, taking shape," tweeted Sarma.

Ever since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, health care providers have been at the forefront to deal with the emergency health crisis. The pandemic has also highlighted the importance of a robust healthcare infrastructure in the country to deal with any such situation in future.

Prime Minister Modi also recently stated that the Central government intends to open at least one medical college in every district of India.
