NEET UG CBT Exam Delayed? Full Online Shift May Wait Until 2028 as Southern States Oppose
NEET UG Computer Based Test is likely to be delayed until 2028 following opposition from southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Reports suggest a full online exam shift may wait until the 2028-29 exam session. Meanwhile, Nandan Nilekani-led panel is considering a hybrid mode for the upcoming NEET 2027 exam.
The Central Government's plan to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG as a computer-based test (CBT) might face heavy delays as several southern states have opposed the decision. According to a recent report, NEET UG 2027 in CBT format may be delayed and is now expected to wait until the 2028-29 academic cycle.
This delay in NEET exam in computer based mode comes after opposition from southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The state governments have raised serious concerns regarding the technology gap between urban and rural areas. They argue that students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and remote rural sectors lack equal access to and understanding of computers, stable internet connections, and proper mock training facilities. Consequently, the Centre is actively working on offering a better plan for medical aspirants appearing in NEET UG 2027 and the academic year.
NEET 2027 in Hybrid Mode?
The High-Powered Task Force (HPTF), headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, has suggested for NEET UG 2027 in hybrid mode. For the immediate upcoming NEET 2027 exam cycle, the panel is considering a computer-based and paper-based examination format. This would allow students the flexibility to opt for either the online computer mode or the traditional pen-and-paper format.
States Demand Equality for State Board Students
Reportedly, the southern states have also demanded that national entrance examinations offer more weightage to local school board marks. They highlighted that the current NEET format favours the CBSE syllabus, creating a disadvantage for state board students.
