Rajasthan health department has decided to equip all the government-run medical colleges in the state with genome sequencing laboratories.

Amid the Omicron threat, the Rajasthan government has decided to set genome sequencing laboratories in all government medical colleges in the state. Now, with the emergence of this new variant of coronavirus, it has become essential to identify the new variant.

Until now this facility was only available in Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College in Jaipur. This college started the genome sequencing laboratory facility and with this Rajasthan has become the first state in India to have its genome sequencing laboratory.

Similar to other states in the country, Rajasthan is also revamping its health care infrastructure. On September 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones for Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET) Jaipur and four district medical colleges in Rajasthan.

These government medical colleges are approved under the central scheme "establishment of new medical colleges attached with district/ referral hospitals".

"Preference to set up medical colleges is given to underserved, backward and aspirational districts. Under three phases of the Scheme, 157 new medical colleges have been approved across the nation," said the PMO press release.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweet on September 29, reads, "Top quality education is a priority for our Government. At 11 AM tomorrow, CIPET: Institute of Petrochemicals Technology, Jaipur will be inaugurated. This institution will cater to the aspirations of youngsters who want to study aspects relating to petrochem and energy sectors."
