The Supreme Court has ordered the government to expedite the NEET MDS 2021 counselling process. It said that the delay will lead to serious consequences to students. NEET MDS results were declared on December 31st last year.

The Supreme Court on Monday, July 12, directed the Centre to announce counselling dates for NEET MDS 2021 within a week. The decision came to a petition which was filed by a group of doctors over inordinate delay in conducting NEET MDS counselling for admission into dental courses. The court observed that the delay will lead to serious consequences to students who have been waiting since the results were declared on December 31, 2021.

A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Hrishikesh Roy slammed the government and ordered it to expedite the process. "We expect an expeditious decision will be taken within a week when Centre proposes counselling for the students MDS NEET results declared on Dec 31, 2020. We hope the Centre is conscious of the serious consequences faced by these students as a result of the long delay of counselling."

The court said that they are qualified BDS doctors government is wasting the lives of doctors. β€œWhen are you going to do the counselling. Government is dilly-dallying over this. You have to hold and complete for MDS NEET. They are qualified BDS doctors and wasting their lives. Allow these doctors. What a loss to India. You are not allowing PG students to complete their studies,” the court said.

Clearing its stand over the matter, Centre said that the delay is NEET MDS counselling due to Madras High Court’s judgement on quota and it has formed a committee to work out the quota. Lawyer Vikas Singh representing the petitioner told the court that counselling needs to be held in the virtual mode in the wake of Covid-19 outbreak. NEET MDS is a ranking examination for admissions to all the postgraduate dental courses offered by the institutions in India. NBE had conducted NEET MDS 2021 exam on December 16 last year.
