According to the Education Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, the Arunachal Pradesh government has approved closing down of zero enrolment schools and notification with guidelines has been issued in this regard. The Education Minister Taba Tedir informed on Monday. During the question hour in the assembly, he was replying to a question by BJP MLA Nyato Rigia. He informed the house that the resolution was passed after the education department held a survey of the schools that are non-functional due to no admission of students. According to 2018-19 data of the Unified District Information on School Education Plus (UDISE+), overall 311 schools in the state are non-operational on account of zero enrollment.

While replying to a supplementary question, the minister informed that teachers of the zero enrolment schools would be sent to other educational institutions where there is a lack of educators. He also informed that the infrastructure of the shut-down schools will be handed over to the deputy commissioners who would take a call on how to exploit them. According to many sources, most of the non-operational schools are situated in remote areas of the state and the main reasons behind zero admission are migration of families in the vicinity of the district headquarters and lack of infrastructure facilities.
