J&K: 5 new GMCs ' work nearly complete; academic activities being shifted to permanent structures
As per the top officials, after much delay, the five new GMCs ' work in J&K is almost complete and now academic activities are being shifted to the permanent structure in a phased manner.
Earlier in December 2021, Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Dr AK Mehta had told the concerned department to ensure that all new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) become functional by March 2022 end. Going by that, now top officials in the state have confirmed that the work on the buildings of five new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) are almost complete and academic activities are being shifted to the permanent structures in a phased manner.
Moreover, the civil works on the Academic Block of GMC Baramulla coming up at Kanth Bagh has picked up speed after the college administration has secured a No Objection Certificate from the adjacent security installation, as reported by Greater Kashmir.
Reportedly, the work was stopped for several months as the security forces had raised the issue of the building's proximity to one of its firing ranges. Dr Yashpal Sharma, Managing Director of J&K Medical Supplies Corporation and Director Coordination New Medical Colleges said the building plan was then modified and now it is being raised as per the new plan.
Other new GMCs in J&K details
At GMC Anantnag, the buildings are complete and running, at GMC Kathua, the academic activities are being carried out from the new campus only, it was one of the first buildings to get ready. At GMC Doda, the academics were currently running from the temporary campus which was well equipped to sustain the academics for some more time. At GMC Rajouri, the Academic, as well as Administrative blocks, are ready in addition to the hostel. We are in the process of shifting to the new buildings, said Dr Sharma.
At the beginning of this month, Dr AK Mehta had conducted an extensive tour of Jammu city to inspect development projects and had directed the concerned departments to ensure that construction works in GMC, Anantnag and GMC Baramulla are completed by March 31 and the colleges handed over to the Health and Medical Education Department, as reported by Daily Excelsior.
