Karnataka medical education gets a boost with the introduction of 15% NRI quota seats in government medical colleges, following NMC’s sanction of 450 additional medical seats.

The Karnataka state is introducing 15% NRI quota seats in the government medical colleges. As per the media reports, the Minister of Medical Education, Sharan Prakash R Patil has announced that the state will have a 15% NRI quota in the medical courses offered by the state. This comes after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 450 new medical seats for the state, addressing a demand that had been pending for a long time. Addressing at a press conference, Dr. Patil announced that out of the 450 newly approved seats, 15% have been reserved under the NRI quota, each carrying a fixed fee of INR 25 lakh.

The additional seats will be available starting from the 2025–26 academic year, bringing the total number of medical seats in the state to 9,663. In the first round of seat allotment after the NEET results, 9,263 seats had already been offered during the Karnataka NEET round 1 counselling 2025. 

Seat Allocation Across Government Medical Colleges in Karnataka

The 450 additional seats have been divided equally between government medical colleges in Bengaluru, Chickballapur, Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Hassan, Raichur, and Vijayanagara. Additionally, the Moorusavira Mutt medical college in Hubballi has also been allocated 50 extra seats.

A few colleges, such as Bangalore Medical College, Karnataka Institute of Medical Science, Hubli, MS Ramaiah Medical College, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute and Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences generally have the highest Karnataka NEET cut off.
