Maharashtra DMER stops faculty members' transfers in GMCs
The DMER has asked medical colleges to stop the transfer of faculty members on the ‘on-deputation’ appointments to other GMCs.
For the first time, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has asked the medical colleges to stop the transfer of faculty members on ‘on-deputation’ appointments to other GMCs.
Due to the transfer of faculty members of medical colleges, the institutes in the state were facing a shortage of medical staff during the inspection of new GMCs by the Centre’s National Medical Commission (NMC).
DMER instructed all the deans of GMCs to halt the ‘on-deputation’ appointments and reinstate them to their parent colleges. “Yes, we have issued the letter and all the faculty members have been called back…as it is a matter of sub-judice, I can’t divulge any further information,” said a senior official from the state’s medical education department in a letter written on July 4, as reported by Indian Express.
Speaking about the age-old practice of on-deputation appointments, a former senior official of DMER said NMC requires a ‘minimum faculty requirement’ to give approval to a medical college. For instance, as per NMC, for 250 MBBS students, the minimum faculty requirement in general medicine is 40 (one professor, 7 associate professors, 8 assistant professors, 8 senior residents and 16 junior residents).
The practice was going on for a long time where the teachers were sent to other GMCs just before NMC's inspection and after the inspection was done, they were transferred back to their respective colleges.
As per the TOI report, NMC repeatedly asked the medical colleges to install Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) which will ensure that they have adequate teaching staff.
