NMC has warned Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College that future ragging complaints by students will be viewed “very seriously”.

Ragging of 1st year PG student could have been handled in a better way: NMC to SVNGMC

National Medical Commission has said that a ragging complaint by Dr Anmol Bhambhani, a first-year student of MS (General Surgery) at Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College could have been handled in a better way and, in future, any such complaint will be viewed very seriously.

As per the complaint, the PG student was not allowed to go to his hostel rooms even if there was no OPD or work in wards, as a result, the student could not get proper sleep or take bath and many more serious allegations were made such as the victim was pulled by the hair.

The victim's mother, Mrs Bhambhani made a complaint to the central helpline Anti Ragging Cell, New Delhi and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Nashik. Reportedly, the Anti-Ragging Cell Committee of the college did not find any strong evidence of ragging and the case was closed without informing the complainant and the suspension of 5 suspected accused was revoked.

“An advisory should be issued to the college to the effect that any future complaints of similar nature will be viewed very seriously by the commission and action as per regulation 18 of the National Medical Commission (Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in Medical Colleges and institutions) regulation, 2021, may be taken by the commission,” NMC warned.

As per the commission, the college must have taken the case seriously by thoroughly investigating the allegations made in the complaint including on-the-spot enquiry instead of taking just written and oral statements.

The complainants in such cases must also be provided with mentoring and moral support and the colleges must keep them informed of the action taken on the complaint, added NMC.
