Raigad district has received a letter of approval from the Central government for the first-ever government medical college in the district.

Raigad Guardian Minister Aaditi Sunil Tatkare has confirmed on Friday that they have received the letter of approval from the Central government on Thursday for setting up the first-ever government medical college in the district.

The Director, Medical Education and Research, Mumbai has been allotted a total of 52 acres of land at Usar for the new government medical college and a 500-bed hospital. Even before receiving the central government's approval, buildings and schools at RCF Colony were taken over on a three-year contract for starting the Alibag Government Medical College and National Medical Commission (NMC) had already visited the site a month ago. The site has space for students, officials and lecture rooms.

The Department of Medical Education and Medicine has approved for 1,072 posts so far and its affiliated 500-bed hospital over the next four years for Rs 61.68 crore, as reported by The Hindu.

The Minister has asked the medical aspirants from Raigad and Konkan to seek admission to the medical colleges as the first batch is anticipated to start in December 2021, with 100 students.

Several states of the country like Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal are setting up new government medical colleges. The former Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan had said in the Rajya Sabha "Since 2014, there are 157 medical colleges in different parts of the country in different stages of development. These include 58 medical colleges in phase 1 and 24 in phase 2 and another 75 in phase 3 which were announced recently."
