Tamil Nadu seeks MCI nod for additional 800 MBBS seats this year
Tamil Nadu government has sought MCI permission for 800 more MBBS seats this year, as confirmed by state Health Minister Ma.Subramanian.
After getting the Centre's permission for an additional 850 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) seats recently at seven new Government Medical Colleges (GMC) in the state, now the Tamil Nadu government has sought the nod of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to add 800 more MBBS seats this year.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma.Subramanian confirmed this while inspecting the construction work of the new GMC in the Nagapattinam district.
"We have sought permission to add 800 more seats this year. Of the 800 seats, 600 are being sought for four new medical colleges in Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Dindigul, and Krishnagiri. We have requested to increase the intake at Ramanathapuram, Namakkal, Tiruppur, and Thiruvallur by 50 seats each taking the total to 200 seats. We will be meeting the Union Health Minister and others on October 27 in this regard," he said, as reported by NDTV Education.
Ma.Subramanian also added that the 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' scheme which means healthcare at the doorstep of people has helped 25 lakh people and this year under 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' scheme, the state government is targeting to provide treatment to one crore people.
In 2020, Tamil Nadu had asked permission to start 11 new government medical colleges in the state with 150 seats each. NMC (National Medical Commission) team had visited this year in August for inspection of hostel facilities, general wards, laboratories and suggested some improvements in colleges in Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Nagapattinam and Ariyalur. Later on, the Union government had approved 850 MBBS seats at seven of the state's new government medical colleges.
