Tamil Nadu government has decided to add 17 new medical colleges that will add 2,350 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats to the total number of seats in the state.

With the starting of these new medical colleges, the state will have 69 medical colleges offering a total of 10,375 MBBS seats. As per National Medical Commission (NMC) website, it is the highest in the country.

TOI quoted R Narayanababu, director of medical education, โ€œWe have got permission for all the 11 new colleges we had applied for with this we will be able to add 1,450 MBBS seats this year. This is the biggest addition to the seat matrix we have made in one year. We also have permission to add 50 more seats to the government Coimbatore medical college.โ€

Tamil Nadu currently has 37 government medical colleges offering 5,125 seats. Four new private medical colleges attached to Dr MGR Medical University are St Peter's Medical College Hospital and Research Institute in Krishnagiri, Faculty of Medicine, Sri Lalithambigai Medical College and Hospital in Chennai, Swamy Vivekanandha Medical College Hospital and Research Institute in Namakkal, and Arunai Medical College and Hospital in Tiruvannamalai. These colleges will add 600 medical seats.
