TN: MPs protested against Centre for delay in AIIMS Madurai project

Various MPs took part in the protest against the delay in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai project. Su Venkatesan, Manickam Tagore and K Nawas Kani were among those MPs who protested. Earlier, in December 2022, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that the project is getting delayed as it has been decided to take it up under EBR funding through JICA.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai foundation stone was laid in 2019, and the construction of the campus is yet to begin even after the first batch of MBBS students commenced their course in the institute this year at the temporary campus in Ramanathapuram Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Now, various members of parliament including Su Venkatesan, Manickam Tagore and K Nawas Kani took part in the protest against the delay.
CPI(M) state secretary K Balakrishnan said, “Four years have passed since the foundation stone was laid. Not even a handful of sand has been moved or no funds have been allocated. Whereas for other AIIMS projects in other states, funds were allocated, the construction is over, and they are now ready for inauguration. In some places, AIIMS has already started functioning. However, as far as Madurai AIIMS is concerned, it is at a preliminary stage of implementation,” as reported by India Today.
Last month Union Health Minister Mansukh Manaviya said that the project got delayed after it was decided to take it up under EBR funding through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as reported by The Hindu.
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar said last year that the construction work of AIIMS Madurai will be completed by 2026.
