The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) will conduct the National Achievement Survey (NAS) to assess the learning achievement of children in government and private schools in November. The survey was last conducted in 2017 for Classes 3, 5 and 8 and in 2018 for Class 10.

The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) will conduct the National Achievement Survey (NAS) to assess the learning achievement of children in government and private schools in November. The survey was last conducted in 2017 for Classes 3, 5 and 8 and in 2018 for Class 10.

The announcement regarding NAS was made by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha recently.

Responding to a written question on whether any survey has been conducted to evaluate the quality of school education of the country, especially considering the recent increase in online education, the minister said: “NAS (2017) was administered in different subject areas such as languages, mathematics, EVS/science and social sciences in the government and government-aided schools. Similarly, NAS for Class X was also conducted throughout the country on February 5, 2018.”

Pradhan said the learning levels of 15 lakh students in 44,304 schools across 610 districts in 34 states and UTs were assessed in five subjects — English, Mathematics, science, social science and modern Indian language. The subjects were the core disciplines of Class 10 curriculum.

Now, a new assessment criteria will be prepared for the next round of NAS which is expected to be held in November 2021, keeping in mind the changes made in Indian education system. Last year, the central government postponed NAS 2020 by one year amid a surge in COVID cases in the country.
