Offline exam decision is by VCs, govt has no role to play: Maharashtra Higher Education Minister

Maharashtra Higher Education Minister Uday Samant has issued a clarification that the state government has absolutely no role to play in the colleges and universities' decision to hold semester examinations offline. The statement comes after several students trolled the Minister for the decision to conduct the exams offline.

“The state higher and technical education department has no role to play in the examination process. We had already floated a government resolution (GR) on February 15 clarifying that the universities would decide as per the prevailing Covid-19 situation. Even Monday’s decision on offline exams was taken jointly by all VCs, we only facilitated their meeting,” Samant told TOI.

He further said that Nagpur University took the decision to offer the exams in online mode in haste and the vice chancellors from other universities also blamed the NU’s move due to which students have been staging agitations across the state. He said that the government will not issue any notification related to examination and the minutes of Monday's meeting have been sent to all Universities.

“If any university is telling students that they are waiting for the government’s decision, they are lying. The universities will make their decision on how to conduct the exams, as decided by all the VCs in Monday’s joint meeting. Our only suggestion to them was to prepare the question bank, which was increasingly being demanded by the examinees. I will soon clarify the government position to the media to clear this confusion among the people,” said Samant.
