Hari Padman, an assistant professor at Rukmani Devi College of Fine Arts, was charged with violating the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act on Friday as a result of a police complaint from a former student at Kalakshetra Foundation.

The woman met Chennai City Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal and complained that the assistant professor had sent her obscene text messages. The complaint was forwarded to the Adyar all-women police station which booked Padman.

Students have been protesting at Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts on the Kalakshetra Foundation campus demanding the ouster of four faculty members accused of sexual harassment. The foundation has now said it would consider appropriate action.

Around 100 women from the Kalakshetra Foundation filed applications with the Tamil Nadu Women's Commission earlier in the day, alleging that at least four male faculty members had verbally and sexually harassed and harassed them. On Friday, with the college still closed, students who had started a sit-in protest on Thursday continued it.

A S Kumari, the chairwoman of the state women's commission, visited with students and instructors on campus on Friday. "Several women claimed that since 2008, they had experienced harassment on campus. A hundred or so complaints, including some for sexual harassment, have been made.
