A group of 24 IAS aspirants had filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India to get an extra attempt in the UPSC 2021 exam. The UPSC in the previous petition of such kind said that the extra attempt could be considered for the “Corona Warriors”, but it requires the consultation and approval of the Department of Personnel and Training under the Ministry of Personnel.

The Supreme Court Judge AM Khanwilkar allowed the petition for hearing and a copy of the petition was served to the counsel of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The UPSC need to reply on the next date of hearing. The hearing of the case will resume after the UPSC reply to the Supreme Court of India.

The present petition is solely asking for an extra attempt for the candidates who will exceed the age limit for the UPSC exam next year. The prayer made in the petition was to get an extra attempt in the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2021, as the petitioners could not prepare for the UPSC exam because of the coronavirus pandemic. It is not known that the candidates were corona warriors or they had suffered from the COVID-19 infection.

In the previous petition regarding the UPSC Civil Services exam, Supreme Court ruled that UPSC should consider an extra attempt to the corona-warriors but within the existing age limit. This has opened a legal loophole for the candidates who had the last attempt this year.
