School in Karnataka ask students to remove rakhi, parents stage protest

A Mangaluru school has reportedly asked students to remove their rakhi threads which were tied on their wrists by their siblings on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. A row erupted after some parents and pro-Hindu groups staged a protest against the teachers and school authorities and accused them of throwing rakhi into the dustbin. They also went to the school management to task, seeking explanations and apologies from teachers. Later, considering the situation that looked tense, the school premises were summoned by the police.

Fr Santhosh Lobo, the correspondent of Infant Mary English Medium School in Katipalla, where the incident took place, said: “Some (staffers) created confusion by behaving irresponsibly. We’ve held a meeting with parents and our staff. Those who committed the mistake have tendered an apology and expressed regrets. With this, all issues have been amicably resolved,” as reported by TOI.

Harinakshi Katipalla, whose brother’s children study in the school, said "parents were hurt when they learned that the school forced children to remove the rakhi. Thursday was the Raksha Bandhan festival, and many children had been to the school with the thread tied around their wrists. Teachers insisted that children should remove the rakhi. When children refuse to do so, teachers forcefully cut it from children’s hands with a pair of scissors. This has hurt our sentiments,” she said.

She further said that the school, allegedly through a public-announcement system, asked children to remove rakhi. However, no police complaint has been filed yet over the incident.
