Researchers of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru are working to maximise the efficacy of a quantum circuit. This has been a subject of great interest to scientists from across the globe. The researchers have solved the problem using a mathematical analogue.  According to a statement from the institute, researchers of IISc have developed an algorithm to clearly count the number of computing resources required and enhanced it to achieve maximum efficiency. Quantum circuits utilise quantum mechanical effects to perform tasks. They are also called the building blocks of quantum computers. They are said to be more accurate and faster than the normal circuits that are found in electronic devices today. However, in reality, no quantum circuit is totally flawless.

According to Aninda Sinha, Associate Professor at the Centre for High Energy Physics of IISc, they were able to create the most efficient circuit and cut down the magnitude of resources required by a huge factor. Aninda Sinha is also the corresponding author of the paper published in Physical Review Letters. The statement also informed that the researchers suggested that this was the maximum possible efficiency achievable for a quantum circuit.

According to Pratik Nandy, Sinha's PhD student and a co-author of the paper, analogously there are universal quantum gates for designing quantum circuits. In reality, the gates are not 100 per cent efficient; there is always an error linked with the output of each gate. And that error cannot be removed; it simply keeps on increasing for every gate used in the circuit. The most effective circuit does not reduce the error in the output, rather it minimises the resources required for getting that same output.
