UGC Introduces One-Year Online, ODL PG Courses for Four-Year Honours Graduates

UGC has allowed eligible universities to offer one-year PG courses in online and distance mode for students who have completed a four-year Honours bachelor's degree under NEP 2020.

UGC Introduces One-Year Online, ODL PG Courses

One-Year PG Courses: In line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, University Grants Commission (UGC) has permitted higher educational institutions to offer one-year postgraduate (PG) programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online mode for students who have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with Honours. The decision was announced through UGC circular issued on July 28, replacing an earlier notification released on July 24. 

Only Eligible Universities Can Launch One-Year PG Courses

As per UGC notification, only those universities or colleges that are already recognised or entitled by UGC to offer a two-year postgraduate programme in ODL or online mode can introduce a one-year postgraduate programme in same discipline. Commission has clarified that institutions cannot start one-year PG courses in new disciplines unless they already have approval to offer corresponding two-year programme.

Four-Year Honours Degree Mandatory for Admission

UGC has stated that admission to newly introduced one-year postgraduate programmes will be restricted to students who have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with Honours, as per NEP. This is mandatory for admission to these programmes offered through ODL and online mode.

For professional postgraduate programmes MBA, MCA, PGDM and similar courses, UGC has clarified that admissions will continue to follow eligibility conditions given by respective regulatory bodies from time to time. 

UGC Directs Institutions to Maintain Academic Standards

Commission has instructed all eligible institutions to ensure that one-year postgraduate programmes fully comply with NEP 2020, UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes and UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, including subsequent amendments.

UGC has further emphasised that curriculum, credit requirements, learning resources, assessment methods and overall academic standards of these programmes must remain consistent with existing UGC regulations.
