Lucknow University mulling to promote 1 lakh students sans exam amid COVID-19 surge

Last year, the state government directed universities to promote all first year and second students on the basis of internal evaluation and performance in the previous semester. Examinations for final year students were conducted via offline mode.

Lucknow University and its 180 affiliated colleges is planning to give promotion to its over one lakh students without appearing in exams due to the prevailing pandemic situation and surge in COVID-19 cases. According to the reports, the authorities of Lucknow University are seeking permission from the state government for promoting the students and a request letter will be sent to the government in this regard shortly. Commenting on the situation, LU spokesperson Durgesh Srivastava said, “The examinations of undergraduate (III and V semesters) and postgraduate (III semester) students have already been held, but the first semester exams scheduled in April had to be postponed due to the second Covid wave. We will seek permission from the government for promoting all students.”

LU official added, “The number of cases is not likely to go down soon, hence conducting the first-semester examination will not be possible. We will seek detailed guidelines from the government on how to promote first semester students who have not appeared in the examination.”

He further added that this promotion will help the varsity to begin the new academic session on time. Meanwhile, the varsity has already commenced the online classes of most semesters. In the case of first semester students whose examinations could not be held, their classes for next semester will begin shortly, he said.
