West Bengal has enforced only the night curfew at present. The state reported 752 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total active cases in the state at 7457.
West Bengal Schools and Colleges may close soon if Omicron COVID-19 cases rise in the state. WB Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has ordered the department to review the overall situation in the state and take preventive measures. She has also said that if the situation so demands, schools and colleges in the state are to be shut down for some time. Amid the rising cases of the novel coronavirus across the country, various state governments are taking stock and reviewing the need for restrictions. Among the first measures are shutting down schools and colleges. As a precautionary measure, the government of the national capital has shut down all schools and colleges in the city.
As for West Bengal, the state has enforced only the night curfew at present. The state reported 752 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total active cases in the state at 7457. The threat of a possible third wave has also intensified with the identification of Omicron cases in the state. 5 more Omicron cases were detected in Bengal today, taking the tally of Omicron to 11.
With the threat rather clear and present, the Chief Minister has asked officials to act promptly and identify containment zones in the city, wherever the cases are on a rise. Apart from schools and colleges, she has also recommended 50% attendance in offices, if required.
"COVID-19 cases are on the rise... there are a few Omicron cases also. So, review the situation in the state. We may consider closing down schools and colleges for some time," Banerjee told officials at the meeting. On the Omicron cases, the officials also raised concerns. Among the 5 cases detected today, only 1 person has a history of foreign travel, sparking fears of the high virulence of the strain. Meanwhile, all across the country, the situation is tense as the administration is keenly looking at the spread of the virus. As per reports, Odisha, which is all set to reopen the schools for students of Classes 1 to 5 from January 3 may also reconsider and put the same on hold. Updates are expected on the decision from the various states soon.
