Basic Eligibility
UG: Those who want to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology should have studied history as a subject in 10+2.
PG: For degree or post graduate diploma courses in archaeology one should have completed his/her graduation in any discipline. However, graduates in social sciences like sociology, history, anthropology are given a preference.

Career prospects for archaeologists are numerous as fields in which they can be employed are diversified. Archaeologists are employed in museums, cultural centers, universities, and different departments of Government and other such related bodies. Apart from these, they are employed in different projects, which are taken by research institutions from time to time.
The Archaeological Survey of India employs archaeologists at the State as well as the Central level either as assistant archaeologists who undertake activities like excavation, archaeological explorations etc., or as registration officers responsible for registering names of those who possess antiques. The vacancies for various posts keep occurring throughout the year. These are advertised in education supplements, Selection is done to these posts on the basis of written exam and interview.
After a PG diploma in Archaeology one can also seek employment through examinations conducted by Union Public Service Commission or Staff Selection Commission for the post of assistant archaeologist. One can also go on to become assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent Class I, join director and so on.
Apart from these, archaeologists can also get jobs in related industries and fields. Archaeology degree holders can also get jobs as tourist guides, heritage managers, interpreters, resource persons of trip organizers in the tourism industry. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the major recruiter for archaeologists in the country both at the center and at the state levels as well. Students who are eligible can apply for suitable positions with ASI after qualifying the examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or by State Public Service Commission's (SPSC).
After acquiring the required degree, one can apply for lectureship in various universities/Institutes across the country. For this, they have to appear for the Junior Research Fellow (JRF) or the National Eligibility Test (NET) these examinations will be conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
After qualifying in the JRF examination a candidate has the option to pursue a doctorate degree in capacity of a paid research fellowship. For taking up a lectureship position in a particular state, candidates must have to clear the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) of that particular state.
