There are a few courses in which DU take entrance examination. Except those courses the admission to any course is merit based.

The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is sought. Minimum education:
10+2 class passed with Science (PCB) & English Core/English Elective with aggregate of 45% marks from recognised board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/SSCE/HSCE or other equivalent Board. Student shall be medically fit. Students appearing in 10+2 examination in Science conducted by National Institute of Open School with 45% marks. Student shall be admitted once in a year. The fee for the courses depends on the colleges. The renowned colleges shall have higher fees than other colleges. The fee for B.Sc. In Microbiology ranges from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 2,00,000. The admissions are mainly based on merits. Some of the top colleges for B.Sc. In Microbiology are St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, RamaKrishna Mission Vidyamandir, Gargi College. The average fee for these colleges is Rs. 40,000. It mainly depends on the college and the course what you want to opt for. Also there are various scholarships for those students who cannot afford the cost of their studies.
