A student who has failed in two compartments in the CBSE 12th exams can appear as a private candidate in the subsequent compartmental exams or the next regular board exams. The CBSE allows students to reappear as private candidates for up to a maximum of three years after failing in the regular exam. After this time the student is also not eligible to sit for a compartmental examination and would thus have to do their education through one of the various other channels, like open schooling or a parallel stream. It would do well to find out the various conditions applicable concerning multiple attempts with CBSE.
