CPT is an entrance or foundation test of CA course. One who wishes to study CA directly after their+2 have to clear this exam and go further. This is conducted twice a year in months of June and December. Other than this, clearing CPT enables an aspirant to get admission into CS.

Actually now the CA course has been changed (Called New Course) in which the entrance test is known as Foundation while in the old course it is known as CPT (Common Proficiency Test). If you take the admission. You will automatically get registered under the New Course therefore you have to take Foundation while filling the registration form.
