Stay in hostels is not mandatory in IIM Mumbai. It's depends on you if you don't want to take hostel, then you can live outside but I think in IIM Mumbai, for some courses like PGDIE, PGDIM hostels are compulsory. In other cases students may or may not opt for hostel. You also check the other details on the internet about hostels of IIM Mumbai.
