It was founded by Dr. A.C. Shanmugam, who is the chancellor of the university. It received its deemed-to-be university status in 2003 as per the orders of the University Grants Commission and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development.
It is not affiliated with any state or central government body, but it is accredited by NAAC with an A grade and ranked 92nd by NIRF in 2023. It is also approved by AICTE, MCI, DCI, INC, and other statutory bodies for various courses.
