Emergency Medicine

Hi buddy, MD Emergency Medicine. Pros - the most recognisable degree in EM right now, job pretty much guaranteed, can become Medical Faculty. Cons - highly volatile, can get recognised at any time, not many clear cut training programs. Very few MCI recognised programs in the country right now. DNB Emergency Medicine. Pros - More stable than MD EM, can become faculty, training programme more definite and fixee. Cons - More difficult to pass than MD EM, step-sister treatment to MD EM, requires a longer period of senior residency before being eligible to become faculty. MEM (SEMI/GWU). Pros - Available in many centres in India, the SEMI has a strong association in the country with regular academic programs and conferences. SEMI MEM is cheaper than GWU MEM. Cons - not MCI recognised, cannot become national faculty. Jobs in thr coming years will be harder to come by with just an MEM, preferable to have it as an additional degree. MRCEM/FRCEM Primary - Pros - can be done either in India or the UK, training is to a rigid and fixed syllabus, in my opinion the best course to get a full feel and understanding of Emergency Medicine. Adequate opportunity to go abroad (UK) and further train after completion. MCI has recognised MRCEM as equivalent to MD EM as of 2017. Part A can be taken soon after MBBS and internship, parts B and C should be taken after minimum of 6 months after working in an emergency department. Basically a foreign degree, good chance of employment, good recognition. Cons - expensive and very difficult. After a post graduate degree in Internal Medicine/ Surgery /Orthopaedics /Anaesthesia/ Pulmonary Medicine, it is possible to become faculty of EM after a certified training course. The main con is, EM is a very broad speciality which will require a certain amount of relearning after an earlier post graduate specialisation
