As per your rank, there are no chances for you to get a good college under JEE Mains examination. So, you better try for a good college with board exams.

In board exams, you need to have at least 75% in board exams and also an aggregate of 75% in PCM. If you don't have it then you are not eligible to get any colleges under JEE even if you qualified JEE Mains and advanced.

To reach your goals, GATE exam is really the gateway.
As you are in first year of your course, you need not to think about GATE exam. You'll start learning your core subjects from your next semester. Develop deep fundamentals and at the same time, aim for higher percentage in your semester exams.
Ideally, you can start preparing for GATE from 3rd year.
