Gap years are normal and students normally take a year gap for entrance exam preparation but the acceptance will depend on the university. If you wanted to study in the US, why did you waste a year for JEE Mains? Instead, you should have been preparing for SAT. So these are some questions they will ask. Now, you must devote all your time to SAT preparation and do really well. You must also take your TOEFL. Admissions will depend on your overall profile, SOP, LOR, extracurriculars, etc.

There are no restrictions on the number of times you can appear for GATE entrance examination for any candidate of any category. The scores obtained in a GATE entrance examination is valid only for one year, following which you can appear again for the entrance examination. By the commencement of the third year of engineering, you will already be familiar with a major part of the syllabus. Therefore, you can start your preparation from the third year of engineering. It is recommended to opt for a GATE coaching institute as they help to provide proper guidance. They conduct periodic tests to help you realise your strong and weak sections which will help you figure out where you need to put more focus on.

As per the regulations issued in 2015, admission to any technical courses requires you to qualify in the respective entrance examinations. Apart from GATE entrance examination, there are a lot of other entrance examinations which are comparatively much easier and you can get qualify in them and secure a seat in a good college for chemical engineering. Different states conduct their own entrance examinations for admission into private colleges in a state, for example, OJEE for Odisha, PGECET for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, TANCET for Tamil Nadu, WBUT for West Bengal, etc. Further, some private universities like SRM Unive
