Duolingo English Test is designed in such a way that it tests the ability of the candidate quickly. The test is adaptive, where if you answer a question correctly then the next one becomes harder, and so on. It assesses a candidate's listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. A variety of questions such as fill-in-the-blank, describe an image, record a sentence, multiple-choice, and open-ended questions are asked. Generally, DET is considered to be easier than the other standardized English language proficiency tests such as IELTS or TOEFL.

In this a picture will appear on the test taker's screen. He/she will then have to speak about the same for a minimum of 30 seconds. The instructions along with the picture will be displayed for 20 seconds on the screen after which it will switch to the record screen. If recorded earlier, you may press 'next' in order to advance further yourself. This exercise is best answered when one describes the picture as if explaining it to a person who cannot see the image.
