Yes, it is possible to get M.Tech admissions with low GATE scores. However, it depends on certain factors, such as category, low cutoff drops in spot-counselling rounds. If you are aiming for NITs, then newly established NITs can be a good option.

There are two types of GATE counselling that offer admission to M.Tech courses and programmes -

  • COAP - it is a portal through which that offers M.Tech admission at IITs and IISc Bangalore
  • CCMT - is a portal through which candidates have to register for M.Tech admission at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

The COAP GATE 2025 registrations for choice filling and selection starts from May 17. On the other hand, the GATE CCMT 2025 dates will be announced soon.

The GATE opening and closing rank during the counselling determines the following -

  • The GATE opening rank determines the highest rank of the candidates required to get admission to a particular programme and category during the counselling.
  • On the other hand, the GATE closing rank is determined as the lowest rank in GATE for the candidate to be admitted to a specific programme and category during the counselling.

You can get admission in NIT but you may have to compromise with the place or the branch or both of them.

Yes, the participating institutes will look for the COAP registration number on their M.Tech applications portal during admissions. Candidates who have applied for the admission to M.Tech in any of the participating institutes, will receive admission offers only via COAP.

To access and take decision on the most preferred choice out of the offers (if any) made by participating institutes, each candidate should register and visit COAP. Without registering at COAP, the candidate will not be able to access the offers on COAP.

The GATE 2026 counselling will start after the declaration of the GATE results (March 19). Candidates who have qualified for the GATE exam are eligible for the counselling. There are two modes of counselling - CCMT and COAP. Candidates who are seeking admission at IITs must register at the COAP portal for counselling. On the other hand, candidates who are seeking admission to NITs and IIITs need to participate in CCMT counselling. The GATE counselling will take place in different rounds, depending on the availability of seats and other factors.
