NIFT conducts its own entrance exam which happens in two stages:
1. General Ability Test (GAT)-This exam comprises 4 sections namely Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, English Language Comprehension and General Knowledge.
2. Creative Ability Test CAT This test is administered to judge the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development and design ability of the candidate. Well, it is clearly mentioned in the Eligibility Criteria of GATE that only the candidates with following degree can appear for GATE for pursuing M.Tech.
Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e. g. AMIE by IE (I), AMICE (I) by the Institute of Civil Engineers (India)-ICE IAS equivalent to B.E. /B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc. /Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs. GATE is required for higher studies like Masters in engineering (M.Tech). For B.Tech in NITs or IIITs, you must get a good rank in JEE Mains and Advanced or you require JEE Mains and Advanced for B.Tech in NITs and IIITs.

Yes, you can have a gap of almost 2 years before doing B.Tech. GATE examination is designed for engineering students.
