No, the GATE 2026 application fee must be paid in one transaction using online payment methods like debit/credit card, UPI, or net banking. There is no option for part payments or EMI. Once the payment is successful, a confirmation receipt will be generated. If payment fails but the amount is debited, wait for a refund or contact support with proof.

Yes, GATE 2026 allows candidates to appear in upto two papers, provided the paper combination (as per the prescribed combinations issued by the authorities). The list of the permitted combinations will be made available on the GATE's official website and information brochure. Candidates must select both the papers carefully during GATE 2026 registration and pay additional fee. Make sure to check the GATE paper codes before adding them. Adding two papers in GATE helps students to expand their chances across multiple disciplines.

Practising GATE old question papers play an important role in preparation. They help in understanding the GATE exam pattern, difficulty level, and topic-wise weightage. It also helps in building accuracy and time management. Aim to solve at least 5 to 10 question papers before the examination.

Coaching isn't mandatory for GATE preparation, though it helps in getting mentorship and accessible tools and study materials. However, many GATE toppers crack the exam through self-study using online resources and their standard books. If you are disciplined and clear with basics, coaching might not be necessary.

Here are some of the best resources that can help in the GATE preparation -

  • Standard text books and lecture notes
  • Previous year's GATE question papers
  • Mock tests (can be found in the GATE's 2026 official website)
  • Video lessons and test series

Restrict following multiple resources as these can cause brain fog and confusion. Maintain a structured schedule to track your errors while solving questions. Revise multiple times.

Ideally, it is better to start preparing for GATE 2026 at least 10 to 12 months before the exam. Starting early will help students to cover the syllabus, revise, and practice mock tests.

In case, you are starting late, then maintain a focused, accelerated schedule with daily goals and stick to essential topics with high weightage.

There is no the easiest subject/branch to crack in GATE 2026. It completely depends on candidate's interest, academics, strengths and skill set. But compared to the previous GATE stats, here are some papers that have lesser competition compared to other GATE papers -

  • Life Sciences (XL)
  • Environmental Science and Engineering (ES)
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (XH)
  • Ecology and Evolution (EY)

These GATE papers usually have a less crowded competition pool compared to high-volume branches like CS, CE, EC, EE, or ME. That said, ease also depends on the syllabus overlap with your graduation, your grip on concepts, and smart preparation. Choose a s

There's no one size fits all "best" branch for the GATE exam. It completely depends on the academic background of the candidate, interest, and career goals.

However,  Computer Science (CS),  Mechanical Engineering (ME),  Electrical Engineering (EE),  Civil Engineering (CE), and Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) are considered to be the most popular engineering branches due to high demand in PSUs and M.Tech admissions.

If you are from the non-engineering background, then branches like Mathematics (MA), Physics (PH), Life Sciences (XL), and Environmental Science and Engineering (ES) have great ca
