IIT Dharwad is part of the "third generation" of IITs. While older IITs like Madras or Bombay lead the charts, Dharwad is catching up to its peers. For instance, in 2025, it was ranked near IIT Bhilai (72nd) and IIT Jammu (56th). Its ranking is particularly impressive given its young age, showing that it is already competing effectively with much older, established technical universities.

Instead of just a single final percentage, the institute uses a 10-point credit system. You'll hear terms like SPI (Semester Performance Index) for your current term and CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) for your overall average. It's not just about one big exam, your grade depends on continuous assessment, including quizzes, lab work, projects, and mid-semester exams, which keeps the learning process steady throughout the year.

One academic year at the IIT Dharwad BTech course is split into two semesters. The first semester usually runs from July to December, while the second runs from January to April. Most of your heavy learning happens during these months. Between these semesters, you'll get breaks, which many students use to take up internships or work on technical projects to add some practical experience to their resumes.

Think of JoSAA as a matching service. After your JEE Advanced results, you'll log into the JoSAA portal and rank your preferred branches at IIT Dharwad. The system then looks at your All India Rank (AIR) and your choices to offer you the best possible seat. Once a seat is offered, you'll pay the fees online and complete a virtual reporting process to lock in your spot before heading to the campus.

Actually, no! You don't apply to the institute directly at the start. Your journey begins on the JEE Main portal, followed by a second application for JEE Advanced if you qualify. The final "application" happens through the JoSAA portal, where you list IIT Dharwad as one of your preferred choices. It's a centralized process, so you only physically deal with the college once your seat is officially confirmed.

Congratulations! After JEE Main, register for JEE Advanced, which is the only way to get into an IIT. This registration usually happens in late April or early May, with the exam itself scheduled for late May. This is a very tight window, so keep a close eye on the official portal right after your Main results are out to ensure you don't miss the deadline.

It starts with JEE Main registration, which opens around November. The first JEE Main session is held in January-February, you must keep your documents ready by the end of the previous year. If you miss the first window, don't worry, you can still register for the second session of JEE Main in April. Please note that most students prefer to attempt both to improve their scores.
