IISER does not provide BSc course. It offers BSMS course. BSMS offers candidates a Bachelor's degree in Science (BS) and a Master's degree in Science (MS). These BS and MS courses are different from BSc course as they focus more on research aspects.

It is a public-technical research university located in Uttarakhand. It is the oldest technical institution in Asia that was given university status in 1949. The university offers 14 undergraduate (UG), 24 postgraduate (PG), and various other PhD courses to the students through its school, and 23 departments across the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, Management, and Social Sciences. As per the placement report, the institute has achieved a 100% placement rate during the MBA placement drive of 2023. The highest package offered stood at INR 27.94 LPA.

IISER students can avail the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana scholarship a National Program of Fellowship in Basic Sciences, initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Department of Science and Technology has decided to subsume KVPY with Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE). The students in the BS-MS programme at IISER Mohali receive the INSPIRE or KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) fellowship as long as they perform well. While KVPY scholars are admitted "automatically'" to the BS-MS program, the JEE merit-listed students are admitted on the basis of their ranks.
