Like all other exams, the minimum marks have been set for the candidates to qualify in the Jamia Millia Islamia entrance exam. As per the general guidelines released by the university, candidates obtaining less than 15% marks in the Objective Type/ Multiple Choice questions will not be shortlisted for interview/admission. Similarly, candidates obtaining less than 30% marks in the descriptive part of the Entrance Test, wherever applicable, will not be shortlisted for interview/ admission. As the minimum qualifying marks are fixed, the candidates should prepare themselves in such a way that they can get more than the prescribed marks in the exam and get selected for the next level.

Hence, it is not that difficult or students need not study anything additional apart from their school syllabus or Current Affairs. Similarly for postgraduate courses, the difficulty level of questions is based on graduation. As the difficulty level of the exam depends on the question types, it is generally tricky in nature, which makes the difference in the difficulty level. In case where many courses or branch are there in one programme, the candidate will be allotted the course or branch as per the preference filled in the application form, strictly as per merit and the admission rules of Jamia Millia Islamia. For upgradation of course or branch, the candidate has to take admission and fill a form at the time of admission, if he or she wants to retain the allotted course or branch or want to upgrade. The upgradation of course or branch will be done strictly as per merit and JMI admission rules. Candidates should keep in mind that the down gradation will be allowed in no case. The candidate is not allowed to change the preference after the form edit date is over.

Jamia Millia Islamia adopts certain policy to break the tie, if two candidates get the same scores in the JMI Entrance Exam. The tie breaking policy is made according to the programme. In all other programmes except B.Tech, B.Arch BDS the tie is resolved on the basis of the date of birth that is the candidates older in age is given the higher rank. For interview programmes, candidates securing high marks in the entrance exam is given higher rank. If the marks in the written test are same then the date of birth criteria is used that is, candidates older in age is given a higher rank. For B.Tech, B.Arch and BDS programmes, the rank is allotted by the agency conducting the test.
