M.Sc Chemistry

The syllabus has following parts:-
Atomic Structure: Bohr's concept. Quantum numbers, Electronic configuration, molecular orbital
theory for homo nuclear molecules, Pauli's exclusion principle. Chemical Bonding: Electrovalency, co-valency, hybridization involving s, p and d orbitals hydrogen bonding. Redox Reactions: Oxidation number, oxidising and reducing agents, balancing of equations. Chemical Equilibrium and Kinetics: Equilibrium constant (for gaseous system only) Le Chaterlier's principle, ionic equilibrium, Ostwald's dilution law, hydrolysis, pH and buffer solution, solubility
product, common-ion effect, rate constant and first order reaction. Acid - Base Concepts: Bronsted Lowry & Lewis. Electrochemistry: Electrode potential and electro-chemical series. Catalysis: Types and applications. Colloids: Types and preparation, Brownian movement, Tyndall effect, coagulation and peptization. Colligative Properties of Solution: Lowering of vapour pressure, Osmotic pressure, depression of freezing point, elevation of boiling point, determination of molecular weight. Periodic Table: Classification of elements on the basis of electronic configuration, properties of s, p and d block elements, ionization potential, electronegativity & electron affinity. Preparation and Properties of the following: Hydrogen peroxide. Copper sulphate, silver nitrate, plaster of paris, borax, Mohr's salt, alums, white and red lead, microcosmic salt and bleaching powder, sodium thiosulphate. Thermochemistry: Exothermic & endothermic reactions Heat of reaction, Heat of combustion & formation, neutralization, Hess's law. General Organic Chemistry: Shape of organic compounds, Inductive effect, mesomeric effect, electrophiles & nucleophiles, Reaction intermediates: carboniumion, carbanions& free radical, Types of organic reactions, Cannizzaro Friedel Craft, Perkin, Aldol condensation. Isomerism: Structural, Geometrical & Optical IUPAC: Nomenclature of simple organic compounds. Polymers: Addition & condensation polymers.
Carbohydrates: Monosaccharides. Preparation and Properties of the Followings: Hydrocarbons, monohydric alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, monocarboxylic acids, primary amines, benzene, nitrobenzene, aniline, phenol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, Grignard Reagent. Solid State: Structure of simple ionic compounds, Crystal imperfections (point defects only), BornHaber cycle
Petroleum: Important industrial fractions, cracking, octane number, anti knocking compounds.

Central Government Jobs after M.Sc in Chemistry.
There are many research institutes in our country that require professionals in the field of chemistry. ISRO, DRDO, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer, etc., recruit the students from M.Sc. Chemistry background very frequently. On top of this, the UPSC, CSIR, UGC, SSC, etc., carry out entrance exams for the recruitment of qualified candidates into the various departments of the government. In addition to this, candidates with M.Sc Chemistry can also appear in the Civil Service exams.
Teaching Profession in Government Sector after M.Sc in Chemistry:
Candidates can seek employment with different universities that are accepted by the government of India. The University of Kerala, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Osmania University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Delhi University, etc., recruit M.Sc Chemistry graduates as lectures if they have cleared NET. Candidates who have a B.Ed degree can go for a teaching career in schools. As one might know, an M.Ed degree alongside NET/SET is required for candidates to apply for teaching posts in colleges or universities. After securing any of the government jobs, the candidates can, later on, appear for department tests. This way, they will get promoted to the higher position.

APSET 2018 Eligibility:
APSET 2018 eligibility criteria which aspirants need to fulfil in order to be eligible to appear for the entrance exam is as mentioned below:
Candidates should have secured a minimum of 55% marks (without rounding off) in their Master's degree or equivalent exam from any university/college that is recognised by UGC. Aspirants belonging to reserved categories such as OBC (non-creamy layer)/SC/ST/PWD are eligible to apply if they have secured minimum 50% aggregate in their Master's degree or equivalent exam. Aspirants who are appearing for their Master's degree final year exam and whose exam result is awaited can also apply for APSET exam. But such aspirants will be offered provisional admission and they need to submit their exam result details at the time of admission. Candidates who possess a Ph.D degree and who have completed their Masters level examination by September 19, 1991 (irrespective of date when the result is declared) will be eligible for 5% relaxation in aggregate marks (that is, from 55% to 50%) for appearing in APSET exam. The official website informs that, Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation only. The candidates, whose post-graduation subject is not covered in the list of subjects may appear in a related subject.
Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for the post of Assistant Professor.
