Yes, it is always good to pursue Journalism studies after 12th itself. AFCOS IIMCs are good without any doubt but there are few other institutes across the country which are equally good as IIMC's. Few things you should keep on your mind prior to proceed for Journalism degree.
Do they have an experienced faculty (Faculty must have expertise in theory and practical both). Do they have Adequate/appropriate equipment to make you expert in handling them? There is no sample question paper for the entrance exam conducted at NIMCJ, but yes, you can prepare yourself by studying the current affairs, topics related to mass communication and journalism. DGCA impanelled doctors who are authorized to conduct the Class 1 medical examination for Pilots.
