Cadet is basically a Trainee Navigational Deck Officer who assists and learns hands-on procedures of various jobs onboard under the supervision of senior officers and primarily The Chief Officer. Engineer is responsible for the running of the engines and their maintenance. Both have different roles on ship.

Hello,
Eligibility for B.Sc. In Nautical Science. As a minimum criterion of eligibility, the course requires the candidate to have attained the 10+2 qualification in the Science stream with Physics, Math and Chemistry as main subjects, and a minimum aggregate score of 60%.

All you need is a one-year specialised course. A one-year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course after mechanical engineering would give students the licence to enter merchant navy. This one-year GME course is all you need to become a marine engineer after doing mechanical engineering.

Entry requirements:
You can join the merchant navy from age 16 as an officer cadet or as an apprentice able seafarer (deck). You'll need at least 4 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English, maths and physics (or combined Science) or equivalent qualifications. If you have A levels or equivalent, in maths or Science, you could do an industry-backed HND, foundation degree, or degree. Subjects include nautical Science, and navigation and maritime Science.
