After an HSC, you should pursue a course you feel you will be comfortable pursuing, and where your interests lie. Ph.D. would remain a distant possibility for an UG student, and you should concentrate more on your UG studies than worrying about a Ph.D. A Masters degree, or its international equivalent, is often required for entry onto a Ph.D. and this is usually the case in arts and humanities subjects.
